motte [mot] (plural mottes) noun
mound for building a castle on: a mound on which a castle was built. Also called moat.

[Late 19th century. Via French, “mound,” from Old French mote (source also of English moat ).]

Pict [pikt] (plural Picts) noun
ancient British tribe member: a member of any of the ancient peoples that occupied lands north of the Forth and Clyde Rivers in Scotland from the 1st to the 4th centuries AD. The Picts prevented the Romans from spreading into central and northern Scotland and later joined with the Scots to form the unified kingdom of Scotland.
[Pre-12th century. From late Latin Picti (plural), of uncertain origin: perhaps from Latin pictus “painted”, from the Picts’ painted or tattooed skin.]
