A Service of Thanksgiving
for
R W Rainsford Hannay
On Friday 16th January at 12:00 noon 2004, the Thanksgiving
Service for Ramsay William Rainsford Hannay took place in the
church of Kirkmabreck in the village of Creetown. Ramsay had
been cared for in the Nursing Home at Gatehouse of Fleet lately
and passed away on Saturday 10th of January 2004. Kirkmabreck is
a beautiful little church sitting on the side of the hill behind
the village and it was crammed full of people from all over and
from various walks of life wishing to pay tribute to a much
loved friend.
Ramsay’s coffin was draped with the family tartan and his
chief’s bonnet with eagles feathers was placed on top. The
service was simple and moving with readings from his daughter,
Mrs Jessica Russell and his grandson , Mark Hannay. His son,
Professor David Hannay gave the family tribute which was
touching, amusing and informative.
After the service a private burial took place in the cemetery
behind Kirkdale House while guest were invited to go on to
Kirkdale for lunch.
I heard many people that day referring to Ramsay as both a
“gentleman” and a “gentle man” and I think there can be no finer
tribute to him than that. I feel honoured to have known him.
